U.S. stock markets have strolled sideways today as investors digest earnings and economic data released over the past week. On the economic front today, the Department of Labor said unemployment claims rose slightly to 343,000, in-line with expectations. Durable-good orders also rose 4.2%, which was ahead of expectations of 2.3% on strong orders for aircraft. When you pull out defense and aircraft orders, the gauge was up 0.7%, showing modest improvement in economic activity. With 35 minutes left in trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) is up a forgettable 0.09%, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC ) has gained 0.25%.
There were a few big losers on the Dow today, driven by quarterly reports. Home Depot (NYSE: HD ) fell 2.3% after homebuilders Pulte and D.R. Horton reported disappointing earnings. The housing market has been improving since the financial crisis, but rising interest rates over the past two months could hurt momentum and indirectly hurt Home Depot. Whether it's new homes or existing homes, improvement in the housing market helps Home Depot, so bad results from builders do not bode well for the company's prospects.

Yet there is a fourth major competitor in the commercial aircraft market -- Bombardier (NASDAQOTH: BDRAF ) -- and it has its own advanced-technology airplane. The company's CSeries plane is expected to make its first flight as early as this week. Yet the CSeries put up a goose egg at the Paris Air Show, failing to notch a single order. While Bombardier has nearly 200 firm orders for the CSeries, the company will rapidly burn through that backlog once it starts CSeries mass production.

Matula, who is currently a SVP for LiveDeal (LIVE), has a history of association with penny stock failures. An interesting angle is his tie to a lawyer in Las Vegas, Michael Balabon, who purports to have two separate practices, including a bankruptcy/divorce practice and an employment law practice who has acted as Registered Agent for many of these companies. I was unable to reach anyone at either office on several occasions. In any event, Balabon is the registered agent for PLPL. Coincidentally, he served in that role for NVLX as well as well as all of the former subsidiaries and partners the firm used (the new Medical Marijuana Sciences subsidiary too). Recall that the predecessor to PLPL was Diamond Ranch, and Balabon was the RA there as well. Matula has served in I.R. roles for perpetual failures like VelaTel Global (VELA.PK).

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Travis Hoium]
The one Dow stock moving significantly lower after reporting earnings is United Technologies (NYSE: UTX ) . The stock has fallen 0.7% today after the company reported a 16% rise in revenue to $14.39 billion. The problem is that revenue fell short of the $14.94 billion estimate, and the company said sequestration might have a $0.10 per-share impact on full-year earnings. I don't think this was a terrible report, especially when you consider that EPS of $1.39 actually beat estimates by $0.09, but investors are concerned about growth, and United Technologies didn't show nearly enough in the first quarter.
- [By John Divine]
The biggest blue chip beneficiary of Monday's manufacturing rally was United Technologies (NYSE: UTX ) , which added nearly 2%. Sentiment from Japan's biggest industrials shifted from largely negative to mildly optimistic in June, and that important swing was mirrored in the U.S., where manufacturing activity swung from contraction to expansion.
