Best International Stocks To Invest In 2015

In Morningstar Stock Investor, Matthew Coffina suggests, "Investors can focus only on the most undervalued current holdings in our Tortoise and Hare model portfolios."

The six stocks featured below are currently our favorites for new money:

Philip Morris International (PM)

Among our holdings, Philip Morris is arguably the most exposed to depreciating emerging market currencies, since it doesn have any US sales. Unfortunately, currency fluctuations are an unavoidable tradeoff for emerging marketsrelatively stable cigarette volumes.

Foreign exchange rates won be a headwind forever, and I still find Philip Morristotal return prospects highly attractive, driven by a 4.8% dividend yield.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B)

Berkshire Hathaway sprawling empire is too complex to describe in a short paragraph. However, its numerous businesses have one thing in common: They were hand-picked by Warren Buffett because of their strong and improving competitive advantages and top-notch managements.

Moreover, American Tower faces two massive rivals in Crown Castle International (NYSE: CCI  ) and SBA Communications (NASDAQ: SBAC  ) , which operate 40,000 and 20,000 American radio towers, respectively. American Tower falls right between them, with more than 21,000 company-owned towers on American soil, and another 7,200 leased tower sites. This is a tight three-horse race, with several smaller competitors trailing far behind.

  • [By Victor Selva] the benefits of being in the right place at the right time.

As a matter of fact, the company is the second largest independent operator of wireless tower communication sites in the U.S. and it is the leading tower owner, with roughly 40,000 sites domestically and over 1,700 in Australia.

The firm leases and licenses antenna spaces on its controlled towers to major wireless carriers such as AT&T Inc. (T), Sprint Nextel Corporation (S) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ). Moreover, it leases access to its distributed antenna systems for the transmission of wireless signals related to the transmission of voice, video and data.

Long Lasting Upsides with Low Risk

Crown Castle has many advantages running to its favor, which have carved the company a narrow economic moat. For one, it boasts great visibility stemming from the fact that its long term contracts have enabled the firm to have more than 97% of its coming year revenue projections already assured.

Secondly, high switching costs make it unlikely for carriers to switch towers, since the costs of such a move would by far exceed the savings from changing to another operator. In addition, zoning regulations hinder carriers to do so. Third, its economies of scale allow the company great cost advantages that result in massive operating leverage.

And lastly, there is the upside of the network effect. Since each tower covers a specific area, multiple carriers will be willing to have presence in the same towers, given this is directly connected to their ability to compete over market share in the areas covered by each site.

    Creating Shareholder Value

In early January 2014, Crown Castle began operating as a real estate investment trust. Upon the announcement of this decision, chief executive Ben Moreland stated that this conversion should ower our weighed average cost of capital and provide additional opportunities for creating long-term shareholder value.I

However, from 2002 to current time we see a conflicting relationship between interest rates and stock prices. In this case, as interest rates continued to decline, stock valuations (PEs) followed suit and declined as well. In theory, this should not happen. Because with interest rates so low, as a practical matter bonds become less competitive to stocks, but even worse, today bonds don even offer any real return. This is especially true when you compare blue-chip dividend yields available from stalwarts such as PepsiCo (PEP), Proctor & Gamble (PG), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), etc., to interest rates. For the first time since I can remember, these companies are offering higher dividend yields than not only the 10-year Treasury but the 30-year as well.

Teva has dropped 7.7% to $37.85 today at 3:23 p.m. but doesn’t seem to be spreading though the generic drug space. Taro Pharmaceuticals (TARO) ha gained 1.1% to $79, while Actavis (ACT) has gained 1.2% to $156.25 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) has advanced 1% to $40.24. Mylan (MYL) has dropped 0.7% to $38.40.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

The company's generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn't growth-oriented -- sales actually fell around 2% for the quarter -- it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country's retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy's (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy's in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry's top locales.
