Top 10 Up And Coming Stocks To Watch Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN  ) have plunged today by as much as 30% after the company reported earnings held back by intensifying competition.

So what: Revenue in the quarter came in at $147.1 million, which translated into non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.11. Earlier this month, Aruba slashed its guidance, and the figures were in line with the reduced forecast. Competitive fears also further rattled investors.

Now what: CEO Dominic Orr attributed weakness to a "heightened level of competition and bundling strategy" from Aruba's largest competitor, Cisco Systems, along with a tough macro environment. The pressure is leading to order delays from Aruba's customers, as Cisco aggressively bundles and cuts prices. Cisco's own earnings release came in better than expected, suggesting that it's seeing success in stealing market share from competitors. Aruba has seen nearly a dozen analyst downgrades in the wake of the results.

With Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) participating in a fresh $750 million investment in Hulu, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) shareholders might be wondering if the House of Mouse will loosen ties with the streaming king. Hulu and Netflix are longtime rivals, after all.

Yet a parting of the ways is unlikely, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video. Why? Netflix and Disney already have an exclusive deal for films in 2016 and beyond. Until then, both Netflix and Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) have access to Disney via fare through arrangements with Epix, a Viacom (NASDAQ: VIAB  ) service that grants access to films distributed by Paramount Pictures no earlier than 90 days after release.

If there's a reason for investors to be fearful, Tim says, it's not the investment in Hulu but Disney's buyback of Paramount's distribution rights to Marvel Studios films Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Epix and its customers should no longer have streaming access to those films.

Absent from the top 10 are any networks from Viacom (VIAB) whose best result is an 18th-place finish for Nick at Nite. I would think Sumner Redstone or whoever takes over the company would be eager to take AMCX private. And they probably are.

    2. Chris Pine's Jack Ryan won't resonate with moviegoers, killing what was once a golden franchise. I can't be the only one who grew up reading Tom Clancy novels. In those stories, Jack Ryan wasn't a James Bond clone but rather a CIA analyst forced to confront uncomfortable circumstances. No longer. In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, director Kenneth Branagh teases the character as an analyst before unveiling an explosive story wherein Chris Pine's Ryan "isn't an analyst anymore." Viacom's (NASDAQ: VIAB  ) Paramount Pictures will distribute the thriller, which hits U.S. theaters on Jan. 17. The studio's last try at cashing in on the late author's work -- 2002's The Sum of All Fears -- earned a solid $193.9 million worldwide on a $68 million production budget.

Falling Stock Correlation: What It Says About Consumer Spending

As we mentioned in the Take Aways from the August 26th Investment Policy Committee meeting, the correlation index has been steadily declining. In 2008-09, macroeconomic events drove nearly every stock downwards. Specific sectors and stocks moved in tandem with one another. Today, stocks and sub-industries within each sector are performing very differently – which indicates a return to a more normal stock market environment.
The Consumer Discretionary (also known as Consumer Cyclicals) sector is an example of an industry that has been rewarded for its fundamental success over the past 12 months. As a whole, the sector grew sales 6.1% and earnings 9.2% in the second quarter - much better than the 1.4% sales and 3.3% earnings growth of the S&P 500. While the overall sector did well in the second quarter, the table below shows how differently the 5 sub-categories of Consumer Discretionary performed:

As we drill down even further, sub-categories of sub-sectors differ even more dramatically. Below is a snapshot of the Retailing sub-sector and its notable components:

Specific stocks within each sub-category are varying in performance as well. General Merchandise retailers were significantly differentiated in the second quarter. Target’s (TGT) adjusted EPS were up 6.1% from 2012, while Dollar General (DG) and Dollar Tree’s (DLTR) earnings were up nearly 12% and 9%, respectively.
The differences in sales and earnings growth amongst these different industries tell a story. The economy is not improving enough that people feel like they can let go and spend money on pure pleasures, but it is improving enough that they can afford to replace their cars and fix the doors on their houses. As these items wear out and need to be replaced, we expect the pent up demand will drive increased economic activity from cons
